Selection and placement
The University of Groningen will allocate places for fixed quota programmes by a process of selecting students.
The selection is not only based on average marks for VWO final examinations, but also on motivation, personality and previous school achievements.
The University of Groningen offers the following fixed quota degree programmes:
- Artificial Intelligence (175 places)
- Biology (250 places)
- Biomedical Engineering (125 places)
- Computing Science (200 places)
- Dentistry (48 places)
- International Business (550 places)
- International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) (300 places)
- Medicine (410 places)
- Pharmacy (225 places)
- Psychology (600 places)

The maximum number of attempts at the selection procedure is programme-specific. Make sure to check the section on selection attempts for an overview of the allowed attempts per programme. Please note that past attempts will also count.

You can apply for admission to a fixed quota programme via Studielink. Applications will be accepted from 1 October 2022 until 15 January 2023.
Limited number of programmes
You may only apply for a maximum of two fixed quota degree programmes in one academic year, with the exception of Medicine and Dentistry.
This means that you cannot apply for two programmes in Medicine, but you can apply for Medicine and another fixed quota programme. For example: Dentistry.
Selection attempts
You will be granted one, two or three attempts at the selection procedure, depending on the programme.

You will have used up a selection attempt if you have an active application after 15 January, regardless of whether or not you actually take part in the selection procedure.

Number of registered selection attempts
If you took part in decentralized selection or a draw in the past, these attempts also count towards your total number of attempts.
You will see the number of selection attempts that you have used up in Studielink. If you think that the number of registered selection attempts at the University of Groningen is incorrect, you must contact the University of Groningen before 1 september via the form Selection and placement.
Check selection criteria
You may be required to submit extra information before 15 January. This depends on the fixed quota programme you are applying for.

You must apply to Studielink by 15 January at the latest if you wish to be considered for selection for a fixed quota programme.
If for some reason you were unable to apply via Studielink before the deadline please submit your request "Missing application deadline (15 January) due to circumstances" as soon as possible using the form Selection and Placement.
Providing extra information
You may be required to provide extra information before 15 January. This depends on the fixed quota programme you are applying for.

Previous education outside the Netherlands
If your previous education was outside the Netherlands, you must upload all the required documents to the Online Application System (OAS) by 15 January. These documents are needed to validate your diploma. You will not be eligible for the selection procedure if your diploma has not been validated.

If your personal details have not been verified by 15 February, you will not be eligible for the selection procedure and you will have used up one of your selection attempts.
Verification personal details in Studielink
In order to create a Studielink account your personal details must first be verified.
Do you have a Dutch residential address?
If you have an official home address in the Netherlands, you must create an account by logging in with your DigiD. Your personal details are automatically verified via DigiD.
Do you not have a DigiD?
If you do not have a DigiD and cannot apply for a DigiD, your identity will need to be verified by another means in order to create a Studielink account. You must upload a scan or photo of you passport or European identity card in Studielink, where its legitimacy and completeness will be checked.
If you are unable to scan your ID or if you run into other difficulties, please check the Verification personal details & Studielink page or report your issue to Studielink.
The fixed quota programmes select students for the available places between 15 January and 15 April.
The decision about whether a selection procedure will be held depends on the number of applications received by 15 January. If the number of applications
- exceeds the number of available places: selection
- is lower than or the same as the number of available places: no selection. Students will take part in matching activities.
Selection criteria and procedure
The selection criteria and procedure vary depending on the programme. For more information, go to the programme page:
Number in the ranking
A ranking of all the participants will be compiled on the basis of selection. The student with the best results will be number 1 and head the ranking.
The ranking numbers will be announced on 15 April 2023 and confirmation of admission sent to the students with places. Studielink is responsible for this.
Explanation
If a programme has a maximum of 100 places, the students ranked number 1 to 100 will be offered a place. Students ranked number 101 and above will be offered places in turn, if other students do not take up the places.
Accept your confirmation of admission within two weeks!
You must accept your confirmation of admission via Studielink within two weeks of receipt.
If you do not, your offer will expire and the place automatically offered to another student.
Not accepted in time
If for some reason you were unable to accept your confirmation of admission in time, you can submit a request for admission in the following academic year.
You must provide evidence of why you were unable to accept in time.
- Submit your request as soon as possible using the form Selection and Placement.
- Enclose the required documentary evidence.
If your request is approved, you will be sent confirmation of admission for the academic year (following the year for which you made the request).
Failing your exams
If you fail the exams you need to be admitted to the programme, your selection attempt can be cancelled. This is only possible if you request the cancelling before 1 September. You will not use up an attempt and will be able to take part in the selection procedure in the following year.
- Submit your request using the form Selection and Placement before 1 September.
- Enclose the required documentary evidence.
Lodging an objection
You can lodge an objection to decisions relating to selection through the Central Portal for the Legal Protection of Student Rights (CLRS).
Objections must be lodged within six weeks. For more information see Regulations for Selection and Placement.
Make sure that you have provided proof of satisfying the entry requirements by 15 July at the latest.
If you fail to do this, your confirmation of admission will expire and your place will be offered to another student.
Problems?
If you are unable to provide proof of satisfying the entry requirements by 15 July, submit a request for postponement using the form Selection and Placement before 15 July.
If you are still unable to provide proof of satisfying the entry requirements by the new deadline, your confirmation of admission will expire.

Receiving confirmation of admission after 15 July
Make sure that you have provided proof of satisfying the entry requirements within two weeks.
If you fail to do this, your confirmation of admission will expire and your place will be offered to another student.
