Preparatory Year

The Preparatory Year is a bridging programme for non-native speakers at the Alfa-College in Groningen. It prepares you for a degree programme at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences or the University of Groningen.

Target group

The Preparatory Year is for asylum seekers and refugees who qualify for highest education.

Admission Preparatory Year

Once you have reached level B1 in Dutch, you may apply for the Preparatory Year. You will only be admitted if you have followed a programme that grants you admission to higher education in your own country, or have a certificate that is at least the equivalent of a Dutch HAVO diploma (senior general secondary education).

Programme Preparatory Year

The Preparatory Year comprises a package of compulsory subjects for everyone, and includes Dutch, English, social orientation, and orientation on the Dutch labor market.

You will also take physics, chemistry, mathematics a/b, biology, economics or history, depending on your preferred degree programme.

The programme includes group assignments, giving presentations and writing reports.
