AI-Enhanced Design: From Ideas to Visuals

In this workshop you will discover how artificial intelligence can transform your design workflow. We will explore practical applications of AI tools for creating visuals, images, presentations, and other design materials, while examining their strengths, limitations, and best practices.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is for academic staff, researchers, teachers, and other professionals who want to integrate AI for their design tasks or learn more about it. You do not need to have used such tools (Canva AI, NapkinAI, GammaAI) before, but you are expected to have basic experience with AI tools in general (Mistral, Claude, ChatGPT etc.).

What will you learn?

• How AI can be applied in design
• Use cases such as social media posts, website visuals/icons, infographics, posters, invitations, and presentation content
• Hands-on experience with AI design tools:
  • Canva AI: Magic Design, text-to-image, AI text generation, AI-generated presentations, Magic Layers, image customization
  • Gamma AI: AI-generated slides, auto-formatting, turning text into presentations
  • Napkin AI: Transforming notes into diagrams, visual flowcharts
  • Other tools: Whimsical, Stitch AI, Manus AI, and more

The first hour of the workshop will be a presentation with a live demo and a discussion session, during which we will introduce the various tools and their functions. The remaining three hours will be dedicated to hands-on learning, during which you will experiment with the tools via tailored assignments. During this session, you will explore the various features and learn how to apply them to tasks relevant to your work.

(Additionally, you are welcome to attend with a question that you may already need help with, and we can provide assistance during the hands-on session!)

Prerequisites

•  Basic experience with AI tools (Mistral, Claude, ChatGPT, etc.).
• It is recommended that you bring your own laptop. If you do not have a laptop, please contact t.j.van.mourik@rug.nl so we can arrange one for you.

Result

By the end of the workshop, you will:

• Understand the capabilities and limitations of AI in design
• Gain hands-on experience with a range of AI design tools
• Be ready to apply these tools to research, teaching, and professional projects

Enrollment and fee

Attendance is free for UG staff and PhD-students, but registration is required.
