Fireside Chat with Dr. Beyza Ünal

20 March 2019

Thursday 19 March, the second Fireside chat took place. GRL Students gathered at Grand Cafe Post Plaza to seize the opportunity to ask dr. Ünal questions about the impacts of emerging technologies on the changing international security landscape.

Dr. Beyza Ünal

Dr. Beyza Ünal is a senior research fellow and cybersecurity expert for the UK-based think tank Chatham House and joined us for the second edition of the Campus Fryslân Fireside Chat series.

Key takeaways

Participants noted that cyber attacks and “game-changing” technologies such as artificial intelligence, hypersonic missiles and robotics could fundamentally reshape the international security architecture that emerged during the Cold War by introducing new security threats and potentially launchinga new global arms race. Other points of discussion included female leadership, the links between gender and security studies as well as career advice for students who are interested in international security. The third edition of the Campus Fryslân Fireside Chat series will take place in June 2019.

Fireside chat

Fireside Chats are special occasions where students get the chance to meet exemplary leaders and have the opportunity to ask them about anything they are personally interested in, ranging from complex political insights to practical career advice. The setting of a Fireside Chat is informal and students are encouraged to discuss all matters in a relaxed yet professional manner.
