BSc Data Science & Society admissions requirements

Great that you have decided to apply for the BSc Data Science and Society!

There are three main requirements:

  • Secondary School Diploma
  • English Requirement
  • Mathematics Requirement

1. Secondary School Diploma


You are required to have obtained a secondary school diploma which allows entry to an academic university. Therefore, you need to obtain a Dutch VWO diploma or international equivalent before gaining entry to the programme. It is also possible to apply with a Dutch HBO (University of Applied Sciences) propedeuse or a colloquium doctum.

If you are applying with a non-Dutch diploma and you haven't graduated yet, you need to provide us with a Statement of Enrolment along with the other required application documents. Please download the document via Statement of enrolment website and ask your highschool officials to fill it out.

If your qualification is not listed on the page, please know that you can still apply, as all applications are assessed on an individual basis.

2. English requirements

As the Data Science and Society programme is fully taught and assessed in English, students are required to demonstrate their English skills by sitting an approved English test.

You are exempted from proving your English proficiency if you...

Have completed your entire secondary education in one of these countries: USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada (English speaking provinces/territories), Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Have passed the English course on your VWO diploma

Have obtained a Dutch HBO Propaedeutic diploma taught and assessed in English

Have obtained the German Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife with a grade of 10 for the English eA/LK/LF.

Have obtained an International Baccalaureate diploma, with English as the medium of instruction

Have obtained an European Baccalaureate diploma from a European School or one of the Accredited European Schools and have (completed) English as final exam subject as L1 or L2

Have obtained at least 3 GCE(A) level certificates from one of the recognized British examination boards

Have obtained the French Option Internationale du Baccalaur éat (OIB) section Britannique / Anglais

Have obtained the South African National Senior certificate with IEB Advanced Programme certificate in English with 55% or more

Have completed a full 3-year Bachelor programme in one of these countries: US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (English-speaking regions only)

Have obtained the Singapore/Cambridge A-levels in at least 3 H2 and 1 H1 content* courses (of which at least 1 course in a contrasting discipline) together with either the course General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry (5 courses in total)

If you do not fall under one of these exemptions, you are required to complete an English language test. The accepted tests and minimum scores are as follows:

  • TOEFL iBT: 90 overall, min. 18 on section scores (TOEFL MyBest Scores are not considered)
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, min. 6.0 on section scores (IELTS Online certificates not accepted)
  • Cambridge C1/CAE or C2/CPE Certificate with grade A, B or C
  • LanguageCert Academic: overall score 70 (min. 65 in every category)
  • Pearson PTE Academic: overall score 66 (min. 62 in Reading and Writing, and 54 in Listening and Speaking)

Keep in mind that IELTS, LanguageCert, Pearson PTE, and TOEFL certificates are only valid for 2 years. Cambridge certificates do not have limited validity.

In case you haven't taken one of our accepted English tests yet, or think this is not necessary for you, then please indicate this with your online application. In case it is required for you to take a test, you will be informed about this in the decision letter.

3. Mathematics Requirements

Due to the content of some courses, DSS has a mathematics requirement. Students are required to have Mathematics proficiency in VWO Wiskunde A or B or an international equivalent.

Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches SL or HL with a passing grade

European Baccalaureate

Mathematics 3 periods or Mathematics 5 periods passing grade

If you did not obtain one of the above-mentioned qualifications, then you are asked to provide us with a Mathematics Course Description Checklist with your online application. You can download the checklist here: Mathematics Course Description Checklist

If your mathematics level is deemed insufficient based on the filled Mathematics Course Description Checklist, you will be required to obtain one of the accepted Mathematics proficiency certificates until the start of the programme. CF accepts the following certificates:

Dutch VWO Mathematics (Wiskunde) A, B, or C certificate with a passing grade (obtained at either CCVX or Boswell-Bèta)

Online Mathematic Placement Test A or B (OMPT-A or OMPT-B) (Obtained via Sowiso, maximum of two attempts allowed) with a minimum average score of 60%, subsections scores of 0% are not accepted.

College Board AP Examination (AP Statistics or AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC: in all cases grade 3-5)

GCE (A) or GCE (AS) level certificate in Mathematics with a passing grade
