Centre for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity supports minority languages

UG/Campus Fryslân is a co-founder of the CRPCC

UG/Campus Fryslân, together with the universities of Warsaw, London, Leiden and the Max Planck Institute, establishes a center for promoting cultural continuity. The Centre is devoted to preserving cultural and linguistic diversity worldwide.

The Centre for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity (CRPPCC) is located in the Liberal Arts faculty at the University of Warsaw and is financed by the Polish Science Foundation. Activities of the CRPPCC focus primarily on supporting the preservation of minority languages and cultures. One example of research performed at the CRPPCC is the Horizon-2020 Marie Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) project “Minority Languages, Major Opportunities” in which innovative techniques for education in minority languages are developed through research. With a budget of 1.6 million euros, the RISE project facilitates the exchange of personnel from different institutions, including RUG / Campus Fryslân, to conduct research on linguistic vitality as an instrument for psychological well-being, health and economic sustainability. This particular project focuses on social, cultural and economic consequences linked to the reduction of linguistic diversity.

Cultural and linguistic diversity

According to Dr. Matt Coler (RUG / Campus Fryslân): "The theme of minority languages and multilingualism is in line with the research agenda of Campus Fryslân and the Frisian knowledge agenda. Our diverse team of PhD students is already working on projects related to this topic. Through the establishment of the Center for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity, we collaborate with renowned international partners to contribute to the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity and put Campus Fryslân on the map."

In addition to the University of Groningen and other CRPPCC members, the Fryske Akademy, and American universities such as Yale, University of Texas and University of North Carolina participate in the Marie Curie RISE project. Campus Fryslân is organizing an international academic congress on this subject in June.
