Bachelor’s Programme ‘Global Responsibility and Leadership’ approved by Ministry of Education

28 February 2017

The Ministry of Education approved the application for the new bachelor’s programme ’Global Responsibility and Leadership’.

’The University College is one of the three most important pillars of the Campus Fryslân, alongside the Graduate School and the Master College. It is amazing that we were able to make this step towards finalising this programme’, says Dean Prof. Dr. Jouke de Vries.

Global challenges, local solutions

With the bachelor’s programme Global Responsibility and Leadership (GRL), Campus Fryslân aims to educate global citizens who are active, aware and seek to forge links. The bachelor’s programme GRL is a University College and characterises itself by offering a small-scale, residential programme, a selection procedure, and an international learning environment. The challenges in the bachelor’s programme GRL are related to the seventeen global goals set out by the United Nations in 2015. ‘These global goals inspire scientific questions. We formed these questions in three fields of study. Firstly, responsible planet looks at sustainability, earth and nature. The second field is known as responsible economy and politics, with subjects targeting the industry, economical growth, globalisation and lastly responsible humanity, where quality of life, health, culture and conflict are centralised. The programme is created with help from regional businesses and knowledge institutions. Students will work on solutions for achieving the UN global goals. They´ll learn how to achieve this through a company, government or civil society by public and business insights. “Global challenges, local solutions” is our motto´, De Vries says.

Toets Nieuwe Opleiding (TNO)

Now that the programme GRL is approved by the Ministry of Education, the next step is the Test New Study Programme (Toets Nieuwe Opleiding, TNO) of the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organization (NVAO). The testing of this new bachelor’s programme by the NVAO is based on the outcome that the programme has the training requirements on a basic quality level. Once the new University College of Campus Fryslân goes through this review process, the programme can actually start. The programme is scheduled to commence in September 2018.

‘The master’s programme ‘Tourism Geography and Planning’ was approved by the Ministry of Education last December. Today we heard that besides the Bachelor’s programme, the Master Sustainable Entrepreneurshiphas has also been approved. Slowly but surely the Campus Fryslân takes shape’, says De Vries.
