Master’s track in Governance and Law in Digital Society set to start in September

14 March 2017

The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has approved the efficiency audit for the new Master’s track in Governance and Law in Digital Society. The programme will start in September 2017.

Governance and Law in Digital Society

The Master’s track in Governance and Law in Digital Society in Leeuwarden is a new specialization within the Master’s programme in Law and Public Administration taught in Groningen. It is an interdisciplinary programme, which combines law and public administration with aspects of security. Graduates can work as policy officers, legal consultants or cybercrime specialists with government organizations, research and advice agencies and non-government organizations. According to Prof. Heinrich Winter , Professor of Public Administration in the Faculty of Law, programmes like this are sorely needed: ‘We launched this new Master’s track because it provides a specialization for which there is a great demand in the market. Our society is digitizing at a rapid pace and that raises questions about the ways in which the public sector can and should react. Issues of digital security in particular receive a lot of attention – from security of financial transactions to security in elections and public order, and safety in the physical world, which is also influenced by developments in digital technology.’

English Master’s track

The new Master’s track will be taught in English at the University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân, the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen and the Thorbecke Academy at NHL University of Applied Sciences. The programme starts in September 2017 in Leeuwarden.

Dean of Campus Fryslân Prof. Jouke de Vries is delighted with the news: ‘This Master’s track will enhance the existing knowledge network in Leeuwarden in the field of law, cyber-safety and governance. It’s speeding up the progress of academic Leeuwarden.’
