Humanitarian Engineering Workshop in Leeuwarden
From 14 to 19 May, Leeuwarden is the stage of the third workshop in the area of Humanitarian Engineering. This year the workshop is organised for the first time by UG/Campus Fryslân in Leeuwarden, together with Texas A&M University in Qatar, Globalisation Studies Groningen, Network on Humanitarian Action - NOHA Groningen and the Centre for Innovation/Leiden University.
During this week an international party gathers to introduce students to topics in the field of humanitarian engineering. Humanitarian Engineering is defined as the use of engineering and social sciences to create, design and implement technologies that would improve the well-being of communities which are facing humanitarian challenges (natural disasters, war conflicts, migration, rapid urbanisation). The group consists of international students from the University of Groningen and students from the prestigious Liberal Arts university Texas A&M. In total there will be 52 participants from different 26 nationalities and 17 staff members from 10 different nationalities.
The programme of the week includes various lectures and workshops. During the workshop, students develop, under expert guidance, their own humanitarian project which will result in a humanitarian innovation that responds to a concrete need and fulfills all ethical criteria.
The third workshop Humanitarian Engineering shows that Campus Fryslân has big international ambitions that contribute to finding local solutions for global challenges.
