University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân Assistant Professor for Environmental Sciences Tessa van der Voort has published a study on the dynamics of deep soil carbon in journal Biogeosciences. She showed that carbon storage in deep soils is more dynamic than previously thought. Soil carbon constitutes the largest storage of organic carbon on land, so it is crucial to assess the stability of this carbon pool. In order to gain these insights, she combined numerical modelling with fieldwork and geochemical lab work. Regarding implications, these types of studies can help safeguard soil as a resource for the generations to come.

''Dynamics of deep soil carbon – insights from 14C time series across a climatic gradient'' has been published open access in the journal Biogeosciences.
