Day for Sustainability - Pimply Pumpkins

02 November 2017

In honor of the Day of Sustainability (10th of October) the Green Office handed out a total of 150 so-called 'pimply pumpkins' amongst all faculties of the University of Groningen. The goal of this activity was to raise awareness about the huge amount of food that is destroyed every year because they don't look the way they are 'supposed' too. The pimpelpumpkins originate from a farmer in Groningen, of whom 125.000 pumpkins were damaged during a hailstorm earlier this year. This created little wounds on the pumpkins which healed and formed 'pimples' on the skin of the pumpkin. Because of this, the farmer could not sell his pumpkins to the normal foodindustry anymore and now 125.000 pumpkins are in danger of being destroyed.
