Lunch walk Noorderplantsoen

10 May 2017

On 6th of April two volunteers from Natuurmonumenten gave a tour of the Noorderplantsoen for students and staff members of the UG. The lunch walk was part of the Health Week. We wanted to give people the opportunity to have a relaxing walk and learn about nature at the same time. Two volunteers from Natuurmonumenten taught us about the rich history and the ecology and nature of the Noorderplantsoen. A fun fact shared by our guide Peter Kruijt:

"Did you know that the invention of gunpowder contributed to the founding of the Noorderplantsoen? Because of gunpowder, the high city walls intended to defend the city were no longer necessary and were torn down in the 19th century. The city council decided to use this open space to build a park. (Leek. N, 2017)
