Job description
The Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business proposes the appointment of a Professor of Business and Management in Life-Long Learning. This professor is a 1.0 fulltime position and only internal staff members of the University of Groningen can apply.
Life-long learning has become crucial in education, work and in society due to compelling social, economic and personal reasons. Digital transformation and increasingly GenAI tooling are reshaping the labour market. To assure future prosperity, including social well-being, innovation and financial and economic stewardship, new economic & business models are required. Lifelong learning helps in adapting to new tools, roles and businesses, and supports economic resilience and sustainable growth. It provides second changes to people and can enhance mental health and personal growth. Besides, life-long education and learning contributes significantly to having impact on society through knowledge transfer and innovation as well as by nourishing funded programmes.
Business schools around the globe and increasingly in the Netherlands have been playing a strong role in management and leadership development by providing Executive (MBA) education and non- degree programs focusing on general leadership, and on specific topics, such as digital transformation, health and social well-being, energy economics and logistics, and sustainability.
Target groups are graduates that are employed in a large range of businesses, government and health institutions, and non-profit organizations.
The chair has an important role in stimulating the development and offering of lifelong learning education with a focus, but not exclusively, on business and management. The chair should also develop knowledge on life-long learning best practices and education, specifically in business and management. Given the important developments and challenges in business and society an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach in education and research is important. The chair is situated at the Faculty of Economics and Business, but should also enhance the development of executive education within the University of Groningen.
Duties of the Chair
The chair has multiple duties within FEB and UG. We expect that the chair:
- Develops a clear education vision on life-long learning within FEB and provides academic leadership in the field of life-long learning, including programme development, programme innovation and programme management.
- Creates knowledge and publishes on executive learning, life-long learning and the educational philosophy that fosters life-long learning in the area of business and management, and becomes a thought leader within UG and beyond.
- Contributes to business and management research within FEB.
- Contributes to education for executives through teaching in different programmes.
- Is visible inside and outside FEB and strongly contributes the impact strategy of FEB and UG.
- Contributes to education for executives through teaching in different programmes.
Qualifications
The candidate being appointed on the chair should:
- Have a strong vision on education for executives and life-long learning and is able to translate this vision into new program and module development;
- Show evidence of successful acquisition of lifelong learning programmes and modules
- Show evidence of being able to develop relevant partnerships with academic and business partners within and outside the University of Groningen, and attract third party funding from multiple parties
- Be very experienced in teaching to professionals and executives
- Have a good publication record in research in business and management in multiple subdisciplines and should be fellow of the research institute FEBRI.
- Have executed research and published on life-long learning
- Have a strong focus on impact of research and the transformation of this research to practice
- Have developed strong knowledge on education and education leadership as reflected by having achieved a BKO and SKO, as well as having completed an Education Leadership program
- Have IUS promovendi (or supervised minimal two PhD students and completed a course on PhD supervision)
- Have Leadership skills and experience as shown by supervision of staff members.
Note that the requirements regarding followed training programmes on education and having IUS promovendi are criteria that needs to be fulfilled to be selected for an interview. For the other criteria, we expect the candidate to fulfill the majority of these criteria.

Conditions of employment
The chair is a position at the level of full professor for 0.8-1.0 FTE. We offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience, based on full-time equivalent, starting from € 7,202 (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 12,584 gross salary per month, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax treatment may apply to Non-Dutch applicants.
