PhD in AI-driven textile identification for circular economy (1.0 FTE) (V25.0403)

Our project will make use sensing technologies (hyperspectral cameras, NIR and Raman sensors), and an edge-compute AI pipeline to sort used garments into recycle, reuse, and manual-review streams; this PhD project tackles the core challenge of designing and optimizing a high-throughput hyperspectral imaging system, fused with complementary spectroscopy data and AI, to automatically identify textile fabrics with high accuracy in real-world sorting conditions by (1) defining optimal spectral bands, spatial resolution, and acquisition speed; (2) developing and validating preprocessing pipelines; (3) architecting and comparing spectral-only and multimodal (HSI + NIR + Raman + RGB) deep-learning models; (4) implementing robust sensor-fusion strategies under varying lighting, fabric blends, and soiling; (5) porting the inference pipeline to an embedded/edge-compute platform; (6) integrating with our robotic pick-and-place cell for iterative field trials; and (7) disseminating results through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations while collaborating closely with our in-house prototyping team.

Qualifications

The ideal PhD candidate for this position is a talented engineer with a Master's degree and has the following traits:

  • Educational background: A master’s degree in computer science/artificial intelligence with a solid grounding in optical and spectroscopic instrumentation, such as hyperspectral, NIR, and Raman systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with rapid prototyping (PCB design, laser cutting, 3D printing) and middleware development to interconnect measurement systems. Experience integrating sensing hardware into a high-throughput sorting line is a plus.
  • Proficient in developing, training, and deploying AI-driven sensor-fusion pipelines, including preprocessing, deep-learning model architectures, and on-device inference on edge-compute platforms.
  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving through experimental design, critical quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and validation of innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Proficiency in anticipating technical and schedule risks within the project, developing effective mitigation strategies, and implementing quality assurance processes so that all prototypes and workflows meet performance benchmarks and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle by providing clear guidance, fostering collaboration, and promoting continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English, with the ability to present findings and collaborate with international teams.

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

  • A salary of € 3,059 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,881 gross per month in the fourth and final year, based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE).
  • A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income.
  • An 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • A position for four years; you will get a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years; prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is to be expected.
  • A university PhD training programme is part of the agreement, and the candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering.

The starting date is flexible, but it must be before 1 November 2025
