Using pronouns at the UG

Using the correct pronouns is an important part of creating a respectful and inclusive environment. Pronouns (such as she/her, he/him, or they/them) are used to refer to someone in conversation or writing. Sharing and respecting pronouns can help ensure that everyone on campus is addressed in a way that reflects their identity.

At the University of Groningen, students and staff can choose to share their pronouns in various places. On this page you can find guidance on how pronouns can be added to profiles and how they can be used in educational settings.

For students

Students can add their pronouns to their Brightspace profile so that fellow students and lecturers can see them.

For staff

Staff members can add their pronouns to their staff profile page. This helps colleagues and students address them correctly.

For lecturers

Lecturers can play an important role in creating an inclusive classroom by using and respecting pronouns.

Tip: Adding pronouns to your email signature

You may also consider adding your pronouns to your email signature. This can make it easier for others to address you correctly, and it can also help create a more inclusive environment. When more people share their pronouns, it becomes more common and comfortable for everyone to do so, including people for whom pronouns are especially important.
