Inclusive Language Style Guide
On this page, you will find the Inclusive Language Style Guide, designed for both students and staff. The guide provides practical tools to avoid stereotypical or unintentionally exclusive phrasing and shows how small language choices can have a big impact.
In addition to advice on gender-conscious language, the guide covers language related to identity, ability and disability, background, nationality, ethnicity, and migration, the use of pronouns, and 'false friends' between Dutch and English.
The guide is available as a downloadable PDF in both Dutch and English and serves as a reference for clear, respectful, and consistent communication within the university.
General guidelines
-
Language changes: Words evolve over time. Some disappear, while others become more common. Be open to new developments.
-
Purpose matters: Use language to help everyone feel welcome, accepted, and respected. Different experiences call for attention and sensitivity.
-
Ask when you’re not sure: People have different preferences, shaped by culture, age, or background. When possible, ask what someone prefers.
-
Be aware of your own biases: Language often reflects assumptions. Think about how your perspective influences the way you speak and how you view others.
-
Learn from mistakes: Everyone slips up sometimes. If someone feels hurt by your words, listen, reflect, apologize when appropriate, and learn from the situation.
