Dr. M. (Mark) van Duijn

Mark van Duijn is Assistant Professor Housing Markets & Real Estate. His main research interests are location behaviour of economic agents, economic valuation of cultural heritage, neighbourhood dynamics and pension systems. He is the coordinator of the course in Advanced Statistical Analysis, which is feared by many students because of its high levels of abstraction.

Van Duijn plays an important role in ensuring that students appreciate the dreaded course in Advanced Statistical Analysis. Students respect his ability to make complex topics interesting and comprehensible. Van Duijn is aware that not all students share his passion for models and statistics, and that not all students have an inborn talent for statistics. Yet his didactic skills and boundless enthusiasm enable him to explain complex material in a simple way. He knows which methods and formulas in the course are considered difficult and pays extra attention to those parts. His attitude is open and involved, allowing for interaction with all students. If a question is raised, he never fails to get to the essence of the question, answering it in a simple, yet serious way. As a result, his answers are not only interesting to those raising the questions, but also appeal to the other students.
