Ellen Nollen

Medisch genetica Nollen doet bij instituut ERIBA in het kader van het Healthy Ageing-programma onderzoek naar de genetische oorzaak van het ontstaan van neurodegeneratieve ziekten als Parkinson, Alzheimer en Huntington. Eerder deed ze hier onderzoek naar aan de Northwestern University in Chicago (VS) en aan het Hubrecht-laboratorium, het KNAW-instituut van Ronald Plasterk in Utrecht.  Nollen heeft ontdekt dat het gen moag-4 de stapeling en de schadelijke effecten van ziekte-eiwitten regelt tijdens het verouderingsproces van cellen.

Ellen Nollen was de eerste onderzoekster die aan het UMCG een Rosalind Franklin Fellowship kreeg toegekend. Met de Rosalind Franklin Fellowships willen RUG en UMCG vrouwelijk onderzoekstalent in huis halen. In 2011  werd ze door de Europese organisatie voor moleculair biologisch onderzoek als enige Nederlandse onderzoeker verkozen tot EMBO Young Investigator. Dat jaar ontving ze tevens ontving een Europese ERC-subsidie van 1,5 miljoen euro voor haar onderzoek. De ERC-grants zijn bedoeld om excellente onderzoeksteams op te zetten of verder te versterken.
