Metting, Dr Esther

Esther Metting works as an assistant professor of eHealth at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and at the Faculty of Economics and Business. Metting has a background in psychology and epidemiology. Her research centres on the implementation of digital healthcare. Digital healthcare offers a wide range of possibilities: from simple applications, such as looking up information on Thuisarts.nl or using the patient portals of healthcare institutions, to complex solutions such as telemonitoring, where patients measure their own blood pressure and send the results to their healthcare provider.
According to Metting, digital healthcare can make an important contribution to making healthcare more efficient. At the same time, a large group of citizens are unable to use this form of care. This applies to approximately 20% to 25% of the population. It’s not just about skills. Many people are afraid of using it, or don’t know what it is. This group does not have access to the most optimal care of the future. This problem is becoming increasingly important and significant.
Together with healthcare providers and patients, Metting is investigating how digitally illiterate people can still benefit from the health advantages of digital healthcare. She was awarded a Veni grant for this research. It is precisely this collaboration with patients, citizens, and interdisciplinary professionals that characterizes Metting’s work. Metting was also involved in various COVID-19 projects, including the evaluation of the CoronaMelder/CoronaCheck for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, and research into the CoronaCheck app.
