Olthof, dr. Jelte
Jelte Olthof is universitair docent bij de Faculteit der Letteren, gespecialiseerd in geschiedenis. Zijn expertise ligt bij retorica, geschiedenis van de Verenigde Staten (1750-1900), presidentiële retoriek en de Amerikaanse grondwet en politiek.
Olthof doet onderzoek naar de retorica van Amerikaanse presidenten en de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Zo bestudeert hij onder andere het retorische presidentschap van George W. Bush en het onvoorspelbare presidentschap van Donald Trump. Olthof is hierbij specifiek geïnteresseerd in het ontstaan, de werking en de invloed van de Amerikaanse Grondwet. Olthof zegt hierover: ‘De Grondwet bepaalt in grote lijnen hoe het politieke systeem in Amerika functioneert, maar in praktijk is het de president die de toon zet. Door middel van sociale media mobiliseert Donald Trump zijn achterban zo sterk, dat Congresleden zich onder druk gezet voelen om met zijn beleid mee te gaan. Daarbij is het Amerikaanse wetboek expres ambigu, wat President Trump hedendaags veel vrijheid geeft. Ook Joe Biden drukte veel beleid door, waarbij geen toestemming van het Congres nodig was.’
