Academy Building lit up in orange on 17 September for World Patient Safety Day

16 September 2026

On 17 September, the Academy Building will be lit up in orange to mark World Patient Safety Day, an international event organized annually by the World Health Organization (WHO).

On World Patient Safety Day, the WHO draws global attention to the prevention of avoidable harm in healthcare. In 2026, the focus will be on the safety of care for people with chronic conditions, under the slogan “Safe care, for life!” Particular attention is being drawn to the risks associated with the long-term and concurrent use of multiple medications. It is especially important for people with chronic conditions that their medications are carefully prescribed, monitored, and evaluated.

The University of Groningen has strong ties to medical research through its medical faculty and is therefore also committed to patient safety. By illuminating the Academy Building in orange, we are highlighting the importance of patient safety and raising awareness among the public, patients, and healthcare professionals. In doing so, the University of Groningen joins other international initiatives that illuminate prominent buildings in orange on this day.
