The social impact of medical innovations

This thesis of Ahmed Seddik focuses on understanding the broader impact of new medical treatments on society. Typically, when governments and healthcare providers assess the value of a new drug or treatment, they look at direct costs like the price of the drug and its effect on patient health. However, this often overlooks other important factors like how these treatments can improve productivity, reduce the burden on caregivers, and benefit the economy as a whole.

Through this research, I developed a new method to measure these broader social and economic effects. By using real-world data from case studies in Germany, I showed how treatments for conditions like migraines and psoriasis can help not only the patients but also boost the economy by increasing productivity and reducing healthcare costs in the long term.

The findings suggest that healthcare spending should be viewed as an investment, not just a cost. When we take into account the full societal benefits, new medical innovations can offer significant returns on investment. This work advocates for using this broader perspective when making healthcare decisions, ultimately helping policymakers allocate resources in ways that benefit society as a whole.
