The research described in this thesis covers two major themes. Part I of the thesis emphasizes the potential of automated synthesis for facilitating and accelerating experimentation in organic and medicinal chemistry. Moreover, the first part of the thesis represents multicomponent reactions (MCRs) as a class of reactions highly amenable to automation. The focus of Part II is an important class of biomolecules, namely carbohydrates. Here, we discuss a synthetic strategy to selectively modify unprotected carbohydrates. This modification was subsequently used to explore the idea of developing a carbohydrate-based lipid probe for bioimaging purposes.
