Physician job satisfaction in the Netherlands

My thesis about “Physician job satisfaction in the Netherlands" explores satisfaction of cohorts of Dutch physicians with various aspects of their work. It shows how their job satisfaction has developed between 2000-and 2009. Furthermore, we investigated how performance before, during and after the medical study (in particular obtaining a residency of first choice) affects job satisfaction, what the differences are in satisfaction in different career phases (start, middle, and end career phase) and how part-time work is related to job satisfaction. In the discussion we explain why job satisfaction is important for doctors and patients. We discuss why doctors are less satisfied with aspects related to the organization of their work and what can be done to improve job satisfaction with these aspects. We suggest a solution to improve the (dis)satisfaction of physicians with administrative tasks. We also discuss possibilities to enhance the percentage of graduates that acquire a residency in the specialty of first choice. Finally we discuss how working shorter or longer affects job satisfaction of physicians.
