Oratie prof. dr. ir. H.J.M. (Harrie) Bastiaansen: Unlocking Europe’s Data Potential: Digital Sovereignty, Innovation, and Governance in Times of Geopolitical Change
The European Commission has outlined a comprehensive vision, ambition and strategy for its data economy. The goal is to unlock Europe’s data potential for innovation and societal value, while safeguarding digital autonomy and data sovereignty. The Common European Data Spaces are developed as the means to do so. As the architectures, standards and building blocks are rapidly maturing, the main challenges for their large-scale deployment and adoption are shifting towards governance, business and innovation management. In this inaugural lecture, Harrie Bastiaansen presents his vision and research agenda to address these challenges. The goals are to improve value creation, to decrease complexity and to stimulate adoption of the overarching data sharing ecosystem. A combined community-driven and participant-driven approach for trusted and interoperable data sharing across sectors, borders and data spaces is presented as the means to do so.
