This inaugural lecture examines how institutional investors, such as pension funds, act as stewards of capital by addressing environmental, social and governance issues alongside financial returns. I explore investor influence on corporate sustainability in a variety of ways, questioning whether and when stewardship produces meaningful improvements in environmental and social systems.
