L.T.J. Kraan, MSc, Faculty of Science and Engineering
Lemke Kraan is a lecturer in the Master’s degree programme in Science Education and Communication. She works specifically in the Communication track, which prepares students for a career in science communication or science journalism. She is also a freelance journalist and works as a radio journalist for, for example, Reporter Radio (NPO Radio1).
Lemke lets students decide what they want to learn more about, and what less, and where they feel the focus should lie. She is not the kind of lecturer to follow her teaching plan regardless. She is aware of the developments taking place in her field, due to her work as a freelance journalist and because of her involvement in a national teaching platform. She incorporates this knowledge into her course units. According to her students, ‘Lemke has lots of ideas and is open to criticism. We see this, for example, in the way that she deals with feedback from students. If she hears about a certain problem from one student, she tries to find out whether there are others who feel the same. This makes it very easy to ask her for help.’ ‘She is very approachable, knows what she is talking about, and is great at getting her message across. Lemke is a super teacher.’
