Y. (Grace) Nishikawa, LLM

Grace joined the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, University of Groningen in 2022 as a researcher. In March 2026, she started a PhD project on jus cogens and the right to a healthy environment. Her expertise is public international law (specialised in jus cogens), international environmental law, and climate litigation in Japan.
She holds LL.M Public International Law and LL.B International and European Law from the University of Groningen. She wrote a master's thesis focusing on the international legal challenges arising from sea-level rise and a bachelor's thesis on jus cogens.
She is also a national rapporteur for Japan, Global Network of Peer Reviewers on Climate Litigation , Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia Law School.
