Master degree in january 1983 (cum laude) with specialization ``system and control theory.'' My masters thesis was called (in Dutch) "Ontwerp van een computer programma voor het oplossen van storingsontkoppelingsproblemen.''

1983 - 1989 Department of Computing Science, Groningen - Researcher/Ph.D. student
As a "wetenschappelijk assistent'' in the department of computing science of the university of Groningen, part of the time I assisted in the setup of the new computing science curriculum. Research first focussed on simulation techniques, resulting in [Sme03], later on discrete event systems, resulting in a Ph.D.degree in January 1989 (promotores: prof. Jan Willems and prof. Jan van der Snepscheut). The Ph.D.thesis was called "Control of Discrete Events.'' [Sme04]

1989 - now Department of Computing Science, Groningen - Assistant Professor
Among other things, my research interests are in Software engineering and discrete event systems.
Together with Petr Kozák (Academy of Sciences, Prague) I organized a congress on discrete event systems in August 1992 [WODES92]. After the 11th international conference on analysis and optimazation of systems in 1994 in Sophia Antipolis (France), also considered to be the second wodes, the next WODES has been co-organised by me in Edinburgh, Scotland in august 1996, this time together with Michael Spathopoulos (Strathclyde University), see [WODES96]. The following WODES was organized in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy by Alessandro Giua, Michael Spathopoulos, and myself, see [WODES98] (a special issue of jDEDS, devoted to WODES98, was published in 2002). Currently I am a member of the WODES steering committee, see e.g. WODES2000.
I participate in IPA (Institute for Programming research and Algorithmics) and in the TMR-project ALAPEDES. I am a member of the Dutch Association for Theoretical Computer Science, the NVTI and participate in the Dutch Foundation for Measurement and Control Technology.
From November  2000, I became a member of the research group software engineering and start studying software architectures and product lines.

1997 - 2000 Department of Mathematics and Computing Science, Groningen - scientific coordinator
In this half-time function, I was a coordinator for education and research within the department and responsible for personal, financial and location management. I was head of the secretary of the department and of the office for education.
In this function, as part of a course on management, I have worked on the electronic learning environment [ELO].

2000 - 2003 Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Groningen - ICT/CBT-coordinator
From september 2001 to februari 2002 I was the faculty coordinator for the electronical learning environment Nestor; next I became involved with the new webplatform of the university.

2002 - now NIOC, member of the board (secretary)
From september 2002 on, I am a member (secretary) of the board of NIOC (The Dutch congress on Computer Science education) and working on the organisation of NIOC2004 in Groningen.

2003 - 2008 Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Groningen - faculty web coordinator
I am chairing the faculty web council and I am a member of the university web council and responsible for both technique and content of the 14 faculty webportals within the university web platform. In 2006 I was also responsible for ict matters in education, like our e-learning environment Nestor, our course cataloge Ocasys and such).

2005 - now Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Groningen - staff member information services and technology
My responsibility is to gather information for the faculty board, both w.r.t. technical matters and the data itself.

2007 - 2008 Demand manager
DM of the faculty in the new ict-organisation of th university, see the DM-pages and CIT.

2013 - organizer Dutch Testing Day (21 November 2013 in Groningen)

2014 - co-organisator of the congres about education of academyNoord (online developments in education; 20 February 2014 in Groningen)

2015 - now Timeless manager (system manager of the TImeless application for the registration of teaching effort in the FSE)
