  • 1993 defence of Ph.D thesis “An Archaeological Survey in the Pontine Region, a contribution to the early settlement history of South Lazio, 900 – 100 BC”
  • 1994 – 1997 KNAW fellowship “Roman colonization south of Rome, a comparative survey of three landscapes” (edited book and various publications)
  • 1997 appointed NWO Post-doc in the research project (1997- 2002) “Regional Pathways to Complexity , landscape and settlement dynamics in Early Italy” (articles, book chapters, congress papers, 4 dissertations, synthetic monograph with G-J. Burgers and P.M. van Leusen in editing phase)
  • 1998 appointed part-time lecturer at the Free University of Amsterdam
  • 1999 appointed van der Leeuw professor in Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology at the Department of Archaeology of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
  • 2001 till present: Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
  • 2002 till present: Director of Studies of the research master Art History and Archaeology of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

  • 2003 till present: director of the Raganello Archaeological Project (Calabria, South Italy) with dr. P.M. van Leusen
  • 2005 till present: co-director with dr. A.J. Nijboer of the Groningen excavations at Crustumerium (Italy)
  • 2005 till present: co-director of the Dharylgach Survey (Crimea, Ukraïne) with dr. P. Guldager Bilde (Centre of Black Sea Studies), Arhus, (DK)
  • 2008 till present: director with dr. J.K. Jacobsen of the Francavilla excavations (Calabria, South Italy)
