dr. N.J.B. (Nicolas) Mangin, PhD

Assistant professor

Former R&D controller in Ingenico, I received in 2012 a Ph.D. in management control from HEC Paris, France. I then worked four years as assistant professor at the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, Switzerland. For the past three years, I have been assistant professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

I specialize in management accounting and management control and have built over time strong skills in business analytics. My main research interests pertain to the relation between the qualities of performance metrics and their use for incentive contracts, decision making, and performance evaluation.

In addition, have developed several R packages to automatize or facilitate data manipulation, project documentation, or the edition of papers and presentations. My extensive coding skills in R allowed me to support research projects in various areas besides management accounting and control, like strategy, financial accounting, or corporate governance.

In the past 14 years I have taught as lecturer, tutor, or facilitator at all levels in higher education, from under-graduate programs to executive education. I also have experience in the supervision of master theses and in the coordination of large introductory courses in management accounting (500+ students).

Finally, to continuously improve students’ learning experience and proficiency in management accounting and management control, I have developed applications to facilitate the production of pedagogical materials like online textbooks, short exercises, tutorials, integrated cases, open and multiple-choice examinations.
