Urban Regions in the Delta - Higher Educated Location Preferences is a research project funded by NWO (2012-2016). Mark worked on further developing state-of-the-art econometric models to get a better understanding of location preferences of highly educated households. A book, a book chapter, and several papers were published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Economic valuation of cultural heritage is a research project funded by Platform 31 (Nicis Institute) and its partners (2008-2013). During the project, Mark obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the VU Amsterdam. The majority of the dissertation shows how to value non-market products, such as cultural heritage, by using state-of-the-art econometric models (e.g. sorting models, differences-in-differences hedonic price models).
