prof. mr. dr. M. (Michel) Vols

Prof. Dr. Michel Vols is a professor of Public Order Law at the University of Groningen and a researcher at the Center for Public Order and Safety (COOV). He conducts research into public order law, housing and law and (legal) methodology.
His research is funded, among others, by the European Research Council. In 2020, Vols received an ERC Starting Grant for the EVICT project (https://www.eviction.eu/). Vols previously received a VENI grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Vols received several prizes for his scientific work (including the Gratama Science Prize and the Nicolaas Mulerius Stipendium).
Vols is a member of the Social Scientific Council (SWR) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). From 2025, he is a member of the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW). Vols is a member of the Young Academy (DJA) of the KNAW. He was previously a (founding) member of Young Academy Groningen.
Vols is Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton (2023-2025). Earlier, he was a research associate at Birmingham City University. He was a visiting scholar at Ghent University, Bristol University, the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Cape Town, the Bar Ilan University (Tel Aviv) and Universitas Sebelas Maret (Indonesia). Vols is one of the chairs of the Housing Law Research Network within the European Network on Housing Research. He is (founding) editor of the book series Studies in Housing Law (Brill De Gruyter).
