Drs. Michaela Carrière is head of the intercultural competence and communication section at the University of Groningen, responsible for the range of programmes on intercultural competence (http://bit.ly/1S1FyId). Michaela Carriere has been involved in the field of intercultural communication since 1998, and has more than 20 years international experience (including extensive experience in India, Indonesia, Burma, Bangladesh, the United States and the Netherlands). She is working on her dissertation research on ‘intercultural ethical dilemmas’.

A few areas of focus:

- A threefold approach to development of intercultural competence on study abroad - pre-departure, while abroad, re-entry. 
- Enabling student advisors to assess and address the emotional impact of cultural transition that students encounter.
- Creating a culture for culture - achieving a departmental critical mass of intercultural competence.
