D.K. (David) Cheruiyot, PhD

Assistant Professor

David Cheruiyot is an Assistant Professor of Media and Journalism at the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies (CMJS) at the University of Groningen. David’s scholarship focuses on how citizens contribute to making today’s news media—both traditional and peripheral—meet their assumed mission to serve their communities better, through three broad ways: First, by examining how public criticism or non-journalists, via digital platforms, influence the profession and institution of journalism. Second, by examining how citizens or organised groups, social movements, or algorithmic actors produce journalistic/content independently, collaboratively, or collectively, and what this means for journalism. Lastly, by exploring the implications of the harms and failures of journalistic institutions (or peripheral journalism entities) on the public, global communities, media policy, and, in general, democracy. David’s research adopts multi-country and comparative approaches, drawing on empirical data from Majority World countries, and is primarily relevant within the fields of media and journalism studies, while its theoretical and conceptual contributions are interdisciplinary and have global applicability. His research has been published in major media and communication publications such as Journalism Studies, Media, Culture & Society, International Communication Gazette, and International Journal of Communication, among others. His published works have won several national and international awards, including the Stuart Hall Prize. He serves as an editorial board member of Digital Journalism, among other journals.
