A.R. (Anna-Rosja) Haveman

Anna-Rosja Haveman is assistant professor of modern and contemporary art at the University of Groningen. As a researcher, I approach art history as a discipline that contributes to cutting-edge interdisciplinary exchange and offers solutions to complex societal challenges through object-based thinking. My dissertation on terraqueous ecocritical art sits at the intersection of art history and landscape studies, combining archival and contemporary case studies within a comprehensive theoretical framework. Practice-based approaches and collaborations are central to my work. In addition to my work at the university I bring research into practice as a curator.
In 2025 I curated the transhistorical exhibition "De Kleuren van het Wad" for the new art centre Kunstcentrum De Ploeg. The exhibition brings together work by 20th-century Ploeg members with the work of modern and contemporary artists. Art has an enormous influence on the perception of the landscape: IMAGE-ination is linked to what you value about a place and how you interact with it. For this exhibition we approached creativity as something that is not solely reserved for professional artists, but as a powerful tool for bringing residents of the region together. That is why several works in the exhibition were created through participation and co-creation. Visitors contributed to this exhibition by painting and by making natural Wadden ink.
Anna-Rosja Haveman regularly presents her research at international conferences and symposia. She has delivered papers at events including the CIHA Conference (2024), the Reinvigorating Beauty Conference (2022), and the ICOMOS Water Heritage Conference (2021). In addition, she has organized and moderated academic events and convened a panel “Aesthetics and Politics of Sustainability” at the Association for Art History’s annual conference (2022). Her contributions focus on environmental humanities and contemporary art practices.
She has published among others in the Dutch art journals Metropolis M, Kunstlicht and de Bulletin van de Vereniging Rembrandt. Academic publications include the paper "Co-created by the Wadden Sea: Artistic and Environmentalist Perspectives on Han Jansen’s Waddenprojects." in NKJ (2023) and "The 5 Continent documenta 7 - The material of James Lee Byars’s ephemeral practice” in Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft (2021) and a chapter “Twee eigenzinnige laatbloeiers. Job Hansen en Jan Jordens in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam” in Nieuwe wegen, De Ploeg en de moderne kunst na de oorlog, published by WBooks and Stichting De Ploeg (2019).
She has won several awards, amongst them the Sustainable Society award at the University of Groningen and the Claudine de With Beurs of Vereniging Rembrandt.
