Inclusivity and accessibility are important issues within the cultural sector, but putting them into practice often remains challenging. What are the main obstacles, and what is needed to create a more inclusive and accessible music scene?

During this Knowledge-Sharing Afternoon, we bring together music organisations, researchers and other professionals from the Northern Netherlands to explore these questions. Together, we will discuss how inclusivity and accessibility take shape in the region, exchange experiences and share practical approaches.

We will also look beyond the stage: from who works within music organisations and which audiences are reached, to the diversity of music genres and the accessibility of the music scene for people living outside the larger cities.

The afternoon also provides an opportunity to meet new people and build connections. Students from the University of Groningen, the next generation of musicians and music professionals, will be present to share their perspectives and connect with organisations from the field. For organisations, this also offers an opportunity to meet potential interns and explore new collaborations.

The afternoon is organised by the Science Shop for Language, Culture and Communication at the University of Groningen, in collaboration the programme Popular Music and Sonic Cultures, ESNS, the municipality of Groningen and GROENN. 

The Science Shop for Language, Culture and Communication has been supporting the collaboration between students on the Master’s track in Popular Music and Sonic Cultures and ESNS for several years running. This has resulted in a number of research projects on inclusivity, specifically focusing on the live music industry.
