Student for a day: a taste of a degree programme

26 March 2015

Just one more ‘Student for a Day’ to go at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and then all 20 of these days will be over for this academic year. Altogether, around 700 prospective students came to find out more about programmes such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Technology and Pharmacy.

Student for a Day ’ secondary school pupils spend a whole day attending lectures, practicals or seminars at a department. Student teams develop a special programme for these days and arrange for professors to give lectures and supervise the practicals and seminars. The reason for this is to ensure the right level (not too difficult but challenging nonetheless) and combination of activities on the day.

The prospective students are positive about the experience. They rate many aspects highly in the evaluations. What stands out is that they often tick that an activity was quite tricky, but that it was interesting and the supervision and explanations were good. There is always a good atmosphere, thanks to the enthusiastic supervision by students.

Thursday 2 April is the last ‘Student for a Day’, at the Biology department. We hope that many prospective students will get a good impression of the programmes, because that is the aim of these days. If they realize that the programme is not for them, this is also good. And if they do decide to come and study here, they are more than welcome!
