The bachelor Artificial Intelligence is an interdisciplinary programme that focuses on human thinking, artificial thinking (computers, robots) and behaviour in social systems (e.g. group behaviour) in order to predict and simulate behaviour.

This web class shows you the diversity of the field of Artificial Intelligence by exploring four important areas of AI. During the first week you are going to find out what intelligence really is by asking yourselves some philosophical questions. The second week is more technical; you will learn what an algorithm is and how you can use one to determine your way in a maze. Human intelligence and interaction between human and system are the central subjects of week three. And… To top it all off, in the last week you will combine all your acquired knowledge to find out what it takes to design a robot.

Spectacular discoveries have recently been made in the field of astronomy, mainly because technological advances make new things possible. In Groningen you can choose to concentrate on the universe itself, or on developing and improving instruments.

By combining the knowledge acquired in this web class you will do a very unique assignment: you will determine the expansion of the universe! In order to do so you will measure the distances and recession velocities of carefully selected galaxies and plot these quantities in a so-called Hubble diagram. This diagram will tell you the current rate of expansion of the universe.

Chemistry is the study of molecules and how they interact. As a chemist equipped with this knowledge, you can produce new substances and materials or devise solutions for all sorts of problems. Chemists are often involved in the development of new medicines or they are searching for new synthetic materials with special properties. Another path chemists might take is creating a more sustainable world by finding new ways to generate energy, for example by using sunlight or motion.

During this web class you will deal with different ways to make motors and little machines on the scale of single molecules. We will also look at molecular machines in nature and at the generation and control of molecular machines as well as the different ways in which chemistry approaches these machines. Finally, we will have a chance to hear the current Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Prof. Ben L. Feringa talk about what it is that excites him about molecular motors, why he thinks they are important and what he thinks the future might bring.

We are becoming increasingly dependent on computers, but they cannot work without us either! After all, someone has to tell them what to do. That requires people who enjoy devising ever-smarter solutions and innovations. Computing scientists design, improve and implement the software and computer systems that businesses and our social life cannot do without.

In this web class we give an introduction into computing science. We discuss challenges that are important in this digital world. Like what can be computed and what not? Can we actually compute everything that is theoretically computable before the last stars in the galaxy fade out? On a simulated computer we will also show you what happens in this machine. During the web class you will write some simple programs, but previous programming experience is not required.

During the bachelor Industrial Engineering and Management you will learn to translate new technologies into practical solutions, like sustainable production processes or new products.

This web class is about smart grids. Nowadays a lot of renewable energy resources such as wind and sunlight are used. However, this poses some unique problems. Most renewable energy resources are not always available. For example there is no sunlight during the night and some days it is more windy than other days. Smart grids integrate smart meters, smart appliances, renewable energy resources and other devices to solve these problems. The smart grid can for example charge your car when there is an excess of energy and stop charging when there is a high demand.

Fortunately, today we can treat many diseases effectively with medicines, but how are medicines made, how do they work and how can they be improved? Because chemistry, biology and medicine come together during Pharmacy, you as a Pharmacy student are able to answer such questions. You also learn to advise both patients and doctors on the safe and effective use of medication.

During the web class you will deal with a drug that (almost) everyone knows: Aspirin. In the first three weeks you learn how Aspirin is made, how you analyze the substance, how the substance works and what the side effects are. In addition, you will study pharmacotherapy in week four.
