Gender, Diversity and Inequalities

The Gender, Diversity and Inequalities research group aims to understand the processes – at structural, cultural, and individual levels – that undermine gender and social equality.

It does so by addressing them from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, and to work creatively with non-academic stakeholders (e.g., governmental, non-governmental or private organisations) in research, education and activism projects to promote a sustainably inclusive society.

New interdisciplinary knowledge

The research group aims to substantiate the importance of addressing gender-based inequalities for achieving a sustainable society. By this, we aim to bring the theme of gender into the discussions and research in sustainability, and create bridges between the gender scholarship and interdisciplinary research on sustainability.

Societal and policy implications

We aim to generate new interdisciplinary knowledge to understand and address seemingly intractable issues around gender inequality and diversity. This understanding has direct and indirect societal and policy implications, for example what types of narratives, communication strategies, policies, interventions, technologies are effective in, for example, creating more awareness of women’s health and disease, access to quality care, or increasing the participation of women and social minorities in decision-making and leadership positions in academia, science, business, politics, sustainability transitions. These guiding themes and questions follow from the key gaps and challenges in the academic literature and practice.

Hands-on research-focused working group

The Gender, Diversity and Inequalities research group is meant to be a hands-on research-focused working group. With its focus on solving gender-related sustainability issues, its added value will be its openness to broader viewpoints, disciplinary perspectives, designs and methodologies, creating a more inclusive academic milieu for all gender scholars, across faculties and career levels.
