The awaited annual symposium of the Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainability Development took place last Monday, 27th October, at our very own House of Connections. Despite the rainy day, Fellows of the Rudolf Agricola School joined interested staff, PhD candidates and students from various faculties within the University of Groningen, but also from other institutions around the globe. We all gathered to discuss the role and relevance of the university in the 21st century. A topic that is especially relevant currently, when the world, the Netherlands and our northern regions are facing multiple challenges and to which the university, as an important societal impact partner, can bring about solutions.

In deze nieuwe podcastserie van de Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development staan prangende maatschappelijke vraagstukken centraal. In de eerste reeks onderzoeken we de voors en tegens van miljardairs. Worden de verschillen tussen arm en rijk te groot? Of zijn miljardairs juist de drijvende kracht achter innovatie en vooruitgang?
Financiële instellingen en multinationals beheren enorme geldstromen. Daarmee spelen ze niet alleen een centrale rol in de wereldeconomie, maar ook in grote politieke en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen, zoals de energietransitie, internationale sancties en geopolitieke conflicten. Soms is hun invloed ronduit problematisch. Banken kunnen, bewust, geldstromen faciliteren naar autoritaire regimes of vervuilende bedrijven. In zulke gevallen is de ethische grens duidelijk. Maar er zijn ook situaties waarin verantwoordelijkheid minder eenduidig is. Kun je een financiële instelling moreel verantwoordelijk houden voor iets waar ze niet van op de hoogte is?

As the world enters the final stretch before the 2030 deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University of Groningen is hosting a key workshop on ‘The Future of Sustainable Development: Understanding the interplay between society, business, and policy for accelerating SDGs and beyond.’ The three-day event, running from 6 to 8 October at the House of Connections, is hosted by the Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development.
De uitverkochte Europese Nacht van de Onderzoekers, een wetenschapsfestival voor alle nieuwsgierigen, bood vrijdagavond een rijk palet aan wetenschap. Dit jaar was het programma iets anders opgezet, waardoor de activiteiten aangenaam verspreid waren over vier verdiepingen en het dak van Forum Groningen. Van tinnitus tot biodiversiteit, en van destructieve leiders tot een digitale wasbeurt: een verslag van de veelzijdige Nacht.
Een toekomstbestendige universiteit kan niet zonder anarchistisch en utopisch denken. Dat stelt Elke Van dermijnsbrugge, onderzoeker en docent aan NHL Stenden en specialist in onderwijskunde en radicale verandering. Op 27 oktober is ze keynotespreker tijdens het evenement ‘Make it happen’ in House of Connections. Daar gaan deelnemers in gesprek over de rol en relevantie van de universiteit in de 21e eeuw. Van dermijnsbrugge: ‘Wat staat er werkelijk op het spel als we van onderop besluiten het anders te doen?’

Tijdens de Europese Nacht van de Onderzoekers kruipt Alette Smeulers, hoogleraar internationale misdrijven, in het hoofd van zogenaamde ‘sterke mannen’. Wat maakt hun leiderschap zo destructief, en hoe kunnen we begrijpen wat hen drijft? Een voorproefje van het wetenschapsfestival op 26 september.
