Experimental Atomic Physics

The research efforts of the Atomic and Molecular Physics group focus on the dynamical processes, induced by atomic, ionic or photonic interactions with (laser-cooled) atoms, (bio-)molecules, clusters and solid surfaces. Secondary processes like molecular fragmentation, light or electron emission are observed and analyzed to understand the primary electron capture and re-arrangement processes. The knowledge obtained in this way is applied in other contexts: e.g. for the diagnostics of fusion (ITER) and astrophysical (solar wind / space weather) plasma properties, and surface properties, and last but not least the molecular mechanisms underlying radiotherapy.
