Text required at the Research Group level

The Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP) and the RuG Protocol define what information is required for each participating research group. The list below provides the headings and subheadings to be used, the contents required (mainly following the SEP), and a length suggestion and/or length limit. The length suggestions and limits do not include the tables.

The Standard Evaluation Protocol contains a checklist of Assessment Criteria to be used by the Peer Review Committee. (See http://www.qanu.nl/comasy/uploadedfiles/sep2003-2009.pdf pp. 39--41.) Please make sure you address these criteria in your text.

All text below in brackets [] is comment only, not to be repeated in your contribution.

Where applicable, the section numbers as used in the old VSNU self-evaluation reports are given, in case you wish to re-use and update text from these reports; these sections are labelled: "VSNU:".

Sections labelled "SEP:" are slightly paraphrased quotes from the Standard Evaluation Protocol.

B.1 General information

[VSNU: 1, 4]

Name of the research group

Research area

Keywords [max. 10; VSNU: 4]

Research group leader(s) during the period 1996-2004

Starting/end date of the research group [if applicable]

Participation in research school

Participation in research institute or research centre

[SEP: The text must indicate in what phase a research group is at the moment of evaluation: recently started, full-blown, running down]

B.2 Strategy and policy

[Suggestion: 1 A4; Limit: 2 A4]

Mission

Programme design in brief [VSNU: 8]

[SEP: Explain the research area and mission in their historical and future context: changes in research subjects of the research group, and strategies and plans for the short and long term. Explain the strategy and policy within the wider organisational context of the research group, such as teaching obligations, research school and national affiliations.]

B.3 Collaborations with other groups and relevance of the research

[Suggestion: 1 A4; Limit: 2 A4]

Collaborations with scientific and industrial groups

Societal and technological relevance [VSNU: 11]

B.4-61 Indicators of academic reputation

[Limit: 2 A4] [VSNU: 12]

Rewards and prizes

Invited lectures [List the 10 most important only; provide numbers per year for others]

Previous peer review results

Externally financed projects [Limit: 10 projects]

[SEP: Cite previous peer reviews, rewards and prizes at the level of the research group and the individuals working within the research group.]

[The results of a bibliometric analysis by CWTS will be included separately.]

B.7 Researchers and other personnel

[Limit: ½ A4]

[SEP: Explain the personnel policy, including recruitment, selection, training, personal development opportunities, mobility and exchange policies.]

[Suggestion: Do not write anything under this heading, but use the following standard text:]

There is no specific personnel policy at the level of the Research Group. Recruitment, selection, training, personal development opportunities, mobility and exchange policies are determined at the level of the institute, the faculty or the university.

[This text will be complemented by a table listing all staff members for the various categories and the various years (from 1999 to 2004 only); this table will be prepared centrally.]

[Table 4: Research staff at the research group level]

B.8 Resources, funding and facilities

[Limit: 1 A4]

Research facilities

[SEP: Describe the research facilities (installations, equipment, computers) and evaluate their condition.]

[Describe research group-specific facilities only; institute-wide facilities will be discussed in the institute section.]

Funding

[SEP: Explain the funding trends (referring to the data in the tables to be provided). Specify the future funding targets.]

[This text will be complemented by a table listing the funding from the various funding sources (in Dutch: eerste, tweede en derde geldstroom) and the various years (from 1999 to 2004 only); this table will be prepared centrally.]

[Table 5: Funding at the research group level]

B.9 Overview of the results

[Limit: 3 A4] [VSNU: 9]

[The research outcomes of the research group are presented in two ways: in text and in tables. (The text sections are not present in the SEP.)]

[In section B.9, the emphasis is on the past performance of the research group.]

[Additionally, the following tables are needed:

  1. A list of three to five key publications that represent the quality and impact of the research;
  2. A table giving the numbers of publications in the various categories and the various years. [This table will be prepared centrally.]
  3. A full list of all publications, by year, for each of the categories:
  • Refereed academic publications [Pragmatically: publications to be found in Web of Science]
  • Other academic publications [Contributions to conference proceedings, book chapters, monographs]
  • [Optional:] Professional publications [aimed at a broader professional audience]
  • Doctoral dissertations
  • [Optional:] Patents [Not: patent applications. Please provide full patent identifiers.]

[As far as possible, this list will be prepared centrally for KVI, MSC and Stratingh.] ]

[Table 6: Results of the research group] [Numbers of publications]

[Table 7: Results of the research group] [Full list of all publications]

B.10 Analysis, perspectives and expectations for the research group

[Limit: 2 A4]

Programme developments and future plans [VSNU: 10]

Anticipated changes in personnel

SWOT analysis

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Threats
  • Analysis
  • [If applicable:] Adjustments to be made to the goals and strategy

[SEP: Provide an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the research group, according to Chapter 4 of the SEP.]

[In section B.10, the emphasis is on the future of the research group.]

1 The peculiar numbering of this section is meant to preserve conformance with the SEP.
