Spin-based properties, applications, and devices are typically associated with magnetic effects and magnetic materials. However, chiral organic molecules and chiral inorganic materials can serve as
spin filters for photoelectron transmission, electron transfer, and electron transport. This phenomenon, known as Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS), has significant implications for the development of new types of spintronics devices and highlights the role of chiral molecules in biological systems. Understanding this effect necessitates moving beyond conventional assumptions related to electron transport in achiral systems. We will present the fundamental mechanism of CISS, its applications, and its broader implications.
