NVvM Audience Award for Eddie Sanchez
PhD Student Eddie Sanchez received the NVvM Audience Award for his poster presentation at NWO Biophysics 2026, held in Veldhoven on 5-6 October. He presented the poster “Visualising Antibiotic Action: AFM Insights into the Mechanism of Novel Antibacterial Agents”, which showcased the research conducted at UNAM (Mexico) and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Wouter Roos lab of Molecular Biophysics @ ZIAM) as part of a double-degree PhD programme. Through this collaborative research he uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate how novel antibacterial agents, ranging from protein nanoparticles to glycopeptide antibiotics, interact with bacterial membrane models. This work highlights the value of AFM in unravelling the mechanisms of action of antibiotics and contributing to the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
