"Bert de Boer Poster Prize" for Chris van Ewijk

14 June 2022

Chris van Ewijk, PhD student in the Molecular Biophysics group of Wouter Roos received the "Bert de Boer Poster Prize" during the biannual Vlieland meeting on the materials research of the Zernike Institute, Stratingh Institute and GBB.

The jury found that Chris’ poster with the title "Real-time depolymerization of a light-driven molecular motor-based supramolecular polymer by High-Speed Atomic Force Microscopy" was very clear, with a clear aim, results, conclusions and outlook. Excellent science was clearly presented. Chris was able to explain the poster well, answered questions convincingly and discussed the impact as well as limitations of the technique and results. The tablet with movies incorporated in the poster, was not just for fun, but very instructive and required to demonstrate the power of the AFM technique applied, including the time scales and direction of changes observed.

About the Bert de Boer Poster Prize

The late Bert de Boer was associate professor in molecular electronics. He passed away 2009 at the age of 35 years, only. Bert was known as an enthusiast, driven, and connecting person. He lived to high standards with respect to research, education, and communication. With the prize named after him we award the outstanding presentation of research results in an appealing manner, following the ideals of Bert de Boer.

The bi-annual Vlieland meeting

During a three day stay happening every second year, the entire field of materials science in Groningen is presented, mainly by our junior staff, thus PhD students and PostDocs. The meeting, which was held first in 1970, provides excellent access to experts outside one's own field in an informal setting, and has resulted in many interesting co-operative efforts.
