Nuclear Physics for the Medical Community Kick-off Workshop
When: | We 15-10-2025 13:00 - 17:00 |
Where: | A900 (building on the left of the Academy Building) |
First workshop in a special workshop series (organized by Julia Even) designed for medical professionals who are curious about nuclear physics and its growing role in our field. This project had been funded through an NWO grant for small innovative projects within the national science agenda (NWA – see: https://www.nwo.nl/en/projects/aumww84148)
The aim of this series is to reduce the barriers and apprehensions often associated with nuclear physics, while highlighting practical tools and insights from the nuclear physics community that can be directly applied to medicine. Together, we will explore how these approaches contribute to:
· The discovery and development of new medical isotopes
· Advancements in therapeutic applications
· Innovations in medical imaging
This workshop series will provide a welcoming environment for open dialogue and cross-disciplinary learning. No prior expertise in nuclear physics is required—our focus is on practical understanding, collaboration, and bridging the gap between physics and medicine.
The workshops are designed for anyone working in nuclear medicine and radiochemistry from a master student level to professor level.
In the first workshop we will introduce everyone to the chart of nuclides. What information can we gather from the chart? What is radioactive decay? Why are certain isotopes stable? Why are others unstable?
The second workshop will take place on December 3rd, 2025. Here we will cover topics of radiation detection and how to analyze decay spectra.
The dates and topics of the workshops in 2026 will be announced on a later moment in time.
All workshops will be interactive and hands-on. We will show you useful online tools that you can use in your daily work.
