On November 22nd, Ron Holzhacker was inaugurated as professor in Comparative Multi-Level Governance and Regional Structure in the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. His lecture ‘ Building Bridges: Governance, Societal Impact, and Sustainable Society in Southeast Asia ’ focused on how we reach decisions within our societies, and the process of interaction between citizens, civil society organizations, and institutions to reach collective decisions. Holzhacker (Chicago, US, 1961) is UEF professor by special appointment.

New Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asia and ASEAN

A new scientific collaboration between the University of Groningen (UG) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) was announced on 1 November. In Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the President of the University of Groningen, Prof. Sibrand Poppema and the Rector of Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati announced the groundbreaking for the Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asia and ASEAN (SEA ASEAN).

The University Museum in Groningen hosted two guest from Indonesia; Dini Rachmadini and Sasanthy Kusumaningtyas of the medical faculty of the University of Indonesia, who were in Groningen to learn about setting up a medical (historic) museum.

RUG FSS and SEA ASEAN visit to National University of Singapore

Prof. Ronald Holzhacker and Dr. Wendy Tan of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and the Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asian and ASEAN (SEA ASEAN) visited the Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore in Singapore on the 28th of October, Friday. Prof. Jonathan Rigg, Director of ARI and Raffles Professor of Social Science at the Department of Geography warmly received them .

The meeting was highly successful and both research institutes were able to identify key strategic research areas that could greatly benefit from mutual collaboration. Prof. Holzhacker has been invited to take part in the upcoming Asian Graduate Student Forum in Singapore. ARI is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on relevant research clusters such as Migration, Changing Family in Asia, Inter-Asia Engagement and Asian Urbanism. Due to ARI’s key role in the region, the delegation has invited Prof. Rigg and his team to the Fall 2017 SEA ASEAN conference in Yogyakarta. Prof. Rigg has enthusiastically agreed.

The RUG-FSS/SEA ASEAN delegation were also fortunate to be able to meet with Prof. Michael Douglass, leader of the Asian Urbanism cluster for a rich and inspirational discussion on issues such as resilience cities and a people-oriented approach to planning. The delegation has invited Prof. Douglass to give a keynote speech at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences in Spring 2017.

RUG FSS and SEA ASEAN visit to National University of Singapore

Prof. Ronald Holzhacker and Dr. Wendy Tan of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and the Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asian and ASEAN (SEA ASEAN) visited the ETH Zurich Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) at the National University of Singapore in Singapore on the 28th of October, Friday. Dr Devisari Tunas, Scenario Coordinator for Archipelago Cities, ASEAN+ warmly received them .

The delegation were shown around the impressive interactive project tables at FCL which showcased their cutting edge research on issues of density, food production, mobility, construction material recycling and city planning with big data in relation to a sustainable future. The FCL is a good example of Europe-Asian collaboration for research institutes and is a world leader in digital research methods and visual modelling in the field of spatial sciences.

The delegation also discussed possibilities for research project collaboration and potential staff and student exchange with the FCL.

The Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) was established by ETH-Zurich and Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), and operates under the auspices of the Singapore-ETH Centre.

The Singapore-ETH Centre was established in Singapore in 2010 as a joint initiative between ETH Zurich and Singapore’s NRF, as part of the NRF’s CREATE campus. The centre frames two research programmes: the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) and the Future Resilient Systems (FRS). The centre aims to strengthen the capacity of Singapore and Switzerland to research, understand and actively respond to the challenges of global environmental sustainability.” – ETH FCL

RUG FSS and SEA ASEAN visit to University of Malaya, Faculty of Built Environment

Prof. Ronald Holzhacker and Dr. Wendy Tan of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and the Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asian and ASEAN (SEA ASEAN) visited the Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya on the 27th of October, Thursday. They were warmly received by Vice-dean Associate Prof. Dr. Melasutra Binti Md Dali from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Dean Associate Prof. Dr. Yahaya Bin Ahmad.

The Faculty of Built Environment is the premier planning studies institute in Malaysia and were keen to explore possibility for research collaborations on subject just as active aging, resilient cities, transportation planning and citizen participation in planning project. As such, they are a natural partner for our Faculty. The delegation also discussed possible staff and student exchanges between the two institutes.

Given University of Malaya’s strategic partnership with SEA ASEAN, the delegation has also extended our invitation to the Faculty of Built Environment to take part in the SEA ASEAN Fall 2017 conference in Yogyakarta.

Prof. Ron Holzhacker and Dr. Wendy Tan of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and the Groningen Research Centre for Southeast Asian and ASEAN (SEA ASEAN) visited the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) at the University of Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur on the 26th of October, Wednesday. They were accompanied by Prayoga Premana, PhD candidate of the SiNGA program and the Faculty of Arts, Department of International Relation.

We were kindly hosted by Prof. Azirah Hashim, Executive-Director of the AEI and her team. The RUG delegation and the AEI team discussed possibilities of a strategic partnership including possible future exchange and collaborations on various governance and sustainable society issues in the region.

The RUG delegation then presented the SEA ASEAN institute agenda and gave a series of short lectures to the research staff and postgraduate students of AEI. Prof. Ron Holzhacker talked about human rights and norm diffusion across Southeast Asia, Dr. Wendy Tan talked about sustainable mobility and planning in Asia, and Prayoga Premana talked about domestic constraints to ASEAN integration. The visit was well received and the delegation was happy to discuss the various research and education exchange possibilities for our faculty and research institute.

The festive opening of an international conference organized by the Universities Indonesia, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. The conference was opened by the Governor of Bali, followed by a keynote address by President Bambang Yudhoyono (6th President of Indonesia).

Ronald Holzhacker joined the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Arie Soesilo for the evening dinner. Earlier in the day, Ron presented a paper on EU external action, including remarks on EU-ASEAN relations.
