Ernstig ondervoede kinderen in ontwikkelingslanden overlijden vaak alsnog nadat ze al zijn opgenomen in een hervoedingsprogramma volgens de richtlijnen van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie. Hun lever is zo erg beschadigd dat ze de gespecialiseerde voeding niet kunnen verwerken.
