16-06-2017:Help! Statistics! Special lecture: 'Banning p-values from science: reasons, consequences and alternatives' by David Traffimow
16-06-2017
The 16th of June, 10.00 - 11.00 hrs in Traversezaal (3rd floor). No registration is needed, please inform your colleagues as well if they are interested.
Most of us have been brought up in the tradition of null-hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and still work accordingly. We use p-values and /or confidence intervals to draw conclusions from our empirical studies. However, NHST has inherent problems which have been discussed repeatedly, primarily in the methodological literature. In 2015, David Traffimow, Editor in Chief of Basic and Applied Social Psychology, made the bold decision to ban NHST from his journal. In this lecture, he will explain his reasons, discuss the consequences of this ban and talk about an alternative to NHST. In addition he will introduce a study on the use of NHST in the Netherlands that will start this summer.
This lecture is organized by the Department of Epidemiology of the UMCG. Contact: Nynke Smidt (n.smidt@umcg.nl) and Christine zu Eulenburg (c.h.zu.eulenburg@umcg.nl)
